My name is Leilei Ji, an MBA student at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The After Five [Bell Tower Toastmasters Club at the Health Sciences Library] was the very first place I joined as soon as I arrived in the US from China. It opened a whole new world to me. Since 2015, the After Five has become one of my best experience in this country.
Firstly, as a non-English native speaker, I received a lot of constructive encouragement to speak up in English with the great help from the club members. Because of the After Five, I gained more courage to attend the case competiton, and finally won the first prize of that national competition.
Secondly, public speaking, used to be one of my top fears, has become something I could enjoy because of the experience at After Five. With the practice and evaluation here, I am now way more confident to give a speech in front of either small or large group of people, which is so helpful for me to thrive in the business environment.
Thirdly, After Five is such a joyful place for me to get relax and become a better self. This place is full of nice and warm hearted people to share their experience to help others. Especially for a foreigner like me, I was concerned about how to get involved into American culture. After Five has provided me such a great opportunity to feel comfortable and learn different perspectives.
In a word, After Five has helped me in both professional and personal sides, such as language, presentation, and culture, etc. And I’m sure this amazing place has made impact not only to me but also to dozens of my classmates and friends. Thank you for providing this great place to us.

I am a DrPH student in cohort 12 and together with my cohort, we wanted to tell you about our excellent experience working with Mary White [Global Public Health Librarian]. Before working with Mary, not only did I not know how to use a citation manager, I had no idea what one was. The idea of learning this technology was daunting, and Mary made it both easy and fun. Since working with Mary, I am able to construct robust search strategies and have an agility I previously didn’t when it comes to using search databases. Mary always makes herself available whenever I have questions and has met with me in person and online and accommodated my crazy work schedule. Mary is amazing and has made me learn something about myself I didn’t previously know…. I love research!

“I’d like to offer recognition to Mary [White, Global Public Health Librarian] in appreciation for her excellent support for our HPM [Health Policy & Management] Lit Reviews course. In addition to her enthusiastic and clear lecture style, she was incredibly responsive to my (and others) requests for support. She provided quick and helpful input on topics ranging from review of an overall research concept to more detailed questions about the quirks of different search engines. It is great to have her as such a knowledgeable and cheerful part of the UNC research support community!”

We appreciate the HSL’s well-designed, detailed and easy-to-navigate website. The ability to have books delivered to the library is great and we love that we can access a vast array of resources through the HSL. The high-tech study rooms are also a great feature and we look forward to using them throughout our time at UNC.
– “The HeartThrobs” Scavenger Hunt team (Physician Assistant program)
We love how the HSL has accessible online databases to research topics without having to come to the library. We also appreciate that the HSL has resources that can gather information for me that may be behind a paywall so I don’t have to make extra purchases during my research. Some other helpful features which we appreciate are the ability to renew books online without coming into the library and the ability to chat with a librarian online for assistance.
– RADDS Scavenger Hunt Team (Radiologic Science)
HSL: “It’s cool” – No Namers Scavenger Hunt team (Radiologic Science)
I love this library for the people on staff! I appreciate the kind and efficient assistance delivered to me my first time in the door by Kaylin and Annie! Thank you very much for your assistance.
– “Something Awesome” Scavenger hunt team (Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling)
It’s so awesome the many ways to connect with a librarian or a member of the library staff! There is so much support and guidance which makes the HSL the best place to be on campus.
— Fantastic Four Scavenger Hunt team (Occupational Therapy)
We enjoyed learning more about the interlibrary loan services available to us through UNC. It’s amazing that we have so many resources at our fingertips!

My top three list for what I love about my HSL: 1. Ease of access – Every service and resource here is super accessible, and if you aren’t sure how to find or locate it? No worries! Because the library staff is readily available to help! 2. Individual study options – The amount of space and variety of options for personal study time is awesome. Especially for a student like me who is most productive when at the library (not home!). 3. Group study options – The fact that group space is readily available without a reservation or that it can be reserved online is a wonderful convenience that I fully plan on taking advantage of! Well, I could keep going, but I promised to stop at three. So there you have it, my top three reasons for why I love my HSL.
